Beaches & Swimming Spots in Malta
Last updated: January 2026
Malta’s best beach experience is mostly in the north and northwest. If you only do one proper beach day, do it there. Below are the spots that consistently deliver clear water and a strong “holiday” feel.
Best sandy beaches (easy and reliable)
- Mellieħa Bay (Għadira): large sandy bay, convenient for full beach days.
- Golden Bay: classic beach with good sunset potential.
- Għajn Tuffieħa: more scenic and natural-feeling (often a favorite).
Smaller bays (good water, faster visits)
- Paradise Bay: compact, clear water, strong visuals.
- Armier area: good for north-side sea days when you want space.
Cliff and rock swim spots (best water, more effort)
- St Peter’s Pool: famous for swims and jumps (use caution and assess conditions).
- Għar Lapsi: a strong local-style swim spot when sea conditions allow.
How to make your beach day actually smooth
- Go early in peak months. The difference is not small.
- Bring water and sun protection. Malta sun is not forgiving.
- Check sea conditions if you’re going to rocky spots.
- If you’re using buses, build extra buffer time in summer.
Common mistake
Trying to do “two beaches + a city” in one day usually reduces the quality of everything. In Malta, a full beach day is often the best decision.
