Visit Comino & Blue Lagoon Malta: Boat Trips, Tips & Best Time to Go
With its electric-turquoise water and white-sand seabed, the Blue Lagoon on Comino is the single most photographed spot in the Maltese islands — and a must-do on any Malta trip. Here's everything you need to know to visit Comino and the Blue Lagoon in 2026, from ferries and timing to how to turn the day into an unforgettable party on the water.
Where is Comino & the Blue Lagoon?
Comino is Malta's smallest inhabited island, sitting halfway between the main island of Malta and Gozo. The Blue Lagoon is the shallow channel between Comino and the tiny islet of Cominotto. The island is car-free and has almost no accommodation, so the vast majority of visitors come on a day trip by boat.
How to get to the Blue Lagoon
The quickest and cheapest route is the ferry from Cirkewwa, on the northern tip of Malta (the same area as the Gozo ferry terminal). The crossing takes only around 20–25 minutes. You can also reach Comino from Mġarr Harbour in Gozo, or join organised boat trips from Sliema and Buġibba.
- From Cirkewwa: regular ferries, roughly hourly through the day; shortest hop to the lagoon.
- From Gozo (Mġarr): ideal if you're already exploring Gozo.
- From Sliema/Buġibba: longer scenic cruises, often including Comino's sea caves.
Note that visitors disembarking at the Blue Lagoon need a registered visitor pass, introduced to protect the area as a Natura 2000 site — booking your crossing online in advance is the easiest way to sort this.
Best time to visit Comino
For the best mix of warm water and fewer crowds, aim for the shoulder seasons: May–June and September–October. July and August have the warmest sea but also the biggest crowds, with the lagoon at its busiest around midday.
Insider tip: take one of the earliest ferries from Cirkewwa (from around 09:00–09:30) to enjoy the lagoon before the day-trip crowds arrive, then relax as it fills up.
Practical tips for your Blue Lagoon day
- Arrive early to secure a spot on the rocks or sandy patches.
- Bring water, sunscreen and water shoes — shade and facilities are limited.
- Always check the last return ferry time before you settle in.
- Pack a waterproof phone case for those famous turquoise shots.
